For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (John 3:17)
Judging others is something we’re generally very good at. At least we think we are. Based on what we hear someone say or what we see them do, we’re quick to ascribe motive and to assume that we know what is going on in their mind and their heart. We feel entirely justified in pronouncing judgement – even though, in reality, we have absolutely no way of divining exactly what another person’s motivations or desires are.
On the other hand, God, who reads the desires of all men’s hearts and knows the words we’re about to speak even before they’re on our lips, did not send His son into the world to condemn or judge the world, but to save it.
The irony is striking. God, being the only One who has both the perfect knowledge and the authority to judge us, chooses to withhold His judgement. We, sorely lacking in knowledge and with no particular authority at all, happily judge others left, right and centre.
