My friend Randy, who blogs at Bible Study Geek, recently posted this:

Religion is of no consequence. It’s Jesus that matters.

I suppose we all have a religion of sorts. Religion is just a means by which we relate to the deity we perceive to be out there somewhere.

Some of us grew up in a religion that relates to God as if he were the universe’s chief of police. We tried to keep a set of rules, at least as long as any of God’s deputies were watching.

Some have a religion that requires that the wrath of God be ameliorated continually.

Some have a religion of tokenism and carry symbols of their religion with them at all times. They might have a fish or a crescent or a khanda on their cars, even.

Some have a religion of superstition. Some have a religion of partying. Some have a religion of asceticism. Even atheism can be a form of religion.

There are lots of religions. There are lots of religions, even, that focus on Jesus, at least in theory.

There is only one Jesus. He is the way. He is the truth. He is the life.

I’m pretty sure he doesn’t care about symbols and practices we use. He wants us to follow him and carry out his mission. He wants us to live with his Spirit.

We could do without the religion. We can’t live without Jesus.

To which I say, amen.
